It all started with my Grandma…
…and her persistent nagging. I’m a big journaler—especially during my teenage years when I needed to let out alllll of that angst. So it’s not odd to find me constantly carrying a book, a journal, and a pen. Because when inspiration would strike, I needed to sit down immediately to scribble down my thoughts. Only to have my grandma point at my journal and demand “you better write me that book.”
Little did she know that I would make a career out of writing books (partly) based on my life…while channeling all of that teenage angst, of course.
The Scoops Series is a young adult contemporary romance trilogy featuring different staff members of our favorite new fictional ice cream shop, Scoops By The Sea. Click here to read the first book!
This series is a love letter to my hometown. Although Haverport doesn’t exist, the tiny little beach town of Niantic does. Right off the coast in Southeastern Connecticut, this quaint town was my home for 18 years of my life. It’s where I spent my summer reading books, writing my own stories, and dreaming of someday bringing those stories to life. It’s also where I worked at the local Dairy Queen, spending many summers serving cones with jimmies (not sprinkles), sundaes with wet nuts (find out in book one 😉) and—oh yes—making a hilarious amount of tips.
These stories also deal with serious issues that we experience with the ones we love—even as teenagers. Addiction, abandonment, heartbreak, loneliness, and big those big life-altering decisions every graduating senior has to face. I hope for anyone out there going through the same things that these books make them feel a little less alone, and know that it’s okay to turn to the people you love and admit when you’re not okay. I also hope they make you fall in love. 🥰
While I don’t live in Niantic now, I do escape there often in the summertime because there’s nothing quite like it. But in my everyday life, I live in Brooklyn with my husband, working as a writer under my real name, Kiersten Hickman.
